Marathon
On Saturday 7th April, the 2007 North Pole Marathon took place at the Geographic North Pole. Run in brilliant sunshine and –25C temperatures, more than 40 competitors from 22 nations took part in the 26.2-mile event, dubbed the world’s coolest marathon. First across the finish line was Thomas Maguire of Ireland who set a new course record of 3:36:10. Italy’s Francesco Galanzino took second place in 3:43:03 with Juan Antonio Alegre of Spain in third position with 3:56:33. Susan Holliday (Great Britain) won the women’s title in 5:50:04. Bike
The first ever mountain bike event at the North Pole took place on Saturday 7th April. The ‘North Pole Bike Extreme’ race saw fourteen competitors from 8 nations pedalling furiously in –21C on specially designed Crescent mountain bikes. Juan Antonio Alegre (Spain) won the 26.2-mile race in a time of ____. His Spanish compatriot Miguel Caselles took second place in _____ with Kym McConnell of New Zealand in third position.
